Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Davis was at the forefront of almost every major development in jazz from World War II to the 1990s: he played on various early bebop records and recorded one of the first cool jazz records; he was partially responsible for the development of hard bop and modal jazz, and both jazz-funk and jazz fusion arose from his work with other musicians in the late 1960s and early 1970s; and his final album blended jazz and rap. Many leading jazz musicians made their names in Davis's groups, including pianist Herbie Hancock, saxophonist John Coltrane, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and guitarist John McLaughlin. As a trumpeter, Davis had a pure, round sound but also an unusual freedom of articulation and pitch. He was known for favoring a low register and relatively sparse playing that served the song rather than display flashy playing, but Davis was also capable of highly complex and technically demanding trumpet work. On March 13, 2006 Davis was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has also been inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame, Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame, and Down Beat's Jazz Hall of Fame.

Special! This is special. If I ever had to choose a single game to take with me to far, far away, where there would a be a SNES, this would be the one. "Secret of Mana" (or "Seiken Desentsu 2", the first was on the Gameboy, renamed "Final Fantasy Adventure" in the West) basically made me rethink my entire concept of video games and the Super Nintendo. From beginning (in the video) to the end, there was always an incredible joy and need to go further, to see what was ahead, to move to a new part of the world, or simply to stay still and enjoy the amazing OST by Hiroki Kikuta (which I still hear today, btw). A curious fact, this game was originally being developed to the Super CD, the SNES CD add-on which eventually was scrapped and Sony turned the project into the original Playstation, so most of the game was remade to fit on a single cart. I wonder how it would have looked on a CD... no one will ever know. It was also great to see this not only released in the USA but Europe as well, it was great news, and I was super thrilled the day It finally arrived in Portugal, immediately picking it up. Only left my SNES when I finished it, returning to it time after time when I wanted to enjoy some more of the music. If you have never played "Secret of Mana", you haven't lived. :)

The classic banjo pickin' scene from the movie Deliverance. Deliverance is a 1972 drama film produced and directed by John Boorman. Principal cast members include Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty in his film debut. The film is based on a 1970 novel of the same name by American author James Dickey. The screenplay was written by Dickey and an uncredited Boorman. In 2008, Deliverance was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Billy Redden plays "Dueling Banjos" opposite Ronny Cox, who joins him on guitar. Redden plays "Lonnie", a mentally retarded, inbred, but extremely gifted banjo player. The song went to #2 for four weeks on the US pop chart in 1973 and topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks the same year. It also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, since it was used in the film without his permission. "Duelling Banjos" was arranged and performed for the movie by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell and was included on the soundtrack album. The song had been composed in 1955 by Arthur Smith as a banjo instrumental he called "Feudin' Banjos". Smith recorded it, playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno. When he was not acknowledged as the composer by the filmmakers, Smith sued. He eventually won, receiving songwriting credit as well as royalties. Two ...
